Renal (Kidney) Cancer Care

During the initial stages of kidney cancer, there are usually no symptoms. However, in later stages, it can present with blood in the urine (haematuria), persistent pain in the back or side, a lump in the lower back, unexplained weight loss, and fever not caused by an infection.

The best initial test to diagnose early kidney cancer is an ultrasonography of the kidneys. Since ultrasound is painless and harmless, it serves as a great first step. If a mass is detected, a CT scan or MRI is performed to evaluate the tumor precisely and plan the best surgical approach.

When the cancer is large and has destroyed a significant portion of the affected kidney, the best treatment is a Robotic or Laparoscopic Radical Nephrectomy. In this life-saving surgery, the damaged kidney is safely removed along with the tumor, allowing patients to lead a normal life with the remaining healthy kidney.

If the cancer is detected early and is relatively small, the best approach is to remove only the tumor along with a small margin of normal tissue, preserving the rest of the healthy, functioning kidney. This highly advanced procedure is known as Nephron-Sparing Surgery and is expertly performed via robotics or laparoscopy.

The most effective way to lower your risk of kidney cancer is to quit smoking, as tobacco use is a primary risk factor. Additionally, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling high blood pressure, and leading an active lifestyle contribute significantly to kidney health.
