Kidney & Renal Stones

Kidney stones form when your urine contains more crystal-forming substances—such as calcium, oxalate, and uric acid—than the fluid in your urine can dilute. Lack of adequate water intake, a high-sodium diet, obesity, and certain medical conditions or family history greatly increase the risk of stone formation.

A stone may not cause symptoms until it moves around within your kidney or passes into your ureter. Once it moves, you may experience:

• Severe, sharp pain in the side and back, below the ribs (Renal Colic).
• Pain that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin.
• Pain that comes in waves and fluctuates in intensity.
• Pink, red, or brown blood in your urine (Haematuria).
• Nausea, vomiting, and feeling a persistent need to urinate.

The first screening test is usually an Ultrasonography of the kidneys. However, to pinpoint the exact size, location, and hardness of the stone, we rely on a highly detailed Non-Contrast CT Scan (CT KUB). Blood and urine tests are also conducted to check for infections or kidney function issues.

We offer the most advanced, minimally invasive treatments tailored to the size and location of your stone:

• RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery): A revolutionary procedure where a flexible scope and laser are passed through the natural urinary tract to dust the kidney stone. No cuts, no bleeding, and discharge is usually within 24 hours.
• PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy): Best for very large or complex stones. A tiny keyhole incision is made in the back to directly access and remove the stone using laser or ultrasound energy.
• URSL (Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy): Used for stones stuck in the ureter tube. A rigid scope and laser are used to break and remove the stone without any incisions.
• ESWL: Non-invasive sound waves used to break smaller stones from outside the body.

Prevention is the best cure. We recommend drinking 2.5 to 3 liters of water daily, reducing salt and animal protein intake, and incorporating citrus fruits (like lemon and oranges) into your diet, as the citric acid helps prevent stone formation.
